Ah yes, another gritty gangster flick from the one and only Martin Scorsese!!!

my heart!! a beautiful and brutal and hilarious small story about finding the least offensive abusive asshole in a world so full of them that a "smile sweetie" feels like a gift...dunno if scorsese meant this to be a sweet, quiet tragedy and i don't know that he understands women and their romantic motivations, but miraculously he understands motherhood...tommy telling a bad joke so long and nonsensical that it makes alice cry from exhaustion is real as hell...

Tommy might be in the top 5most annoying little sh*ts I’ve ever seen in in a movie

Not trying to start sh*t but it is unbelievably obvious who has and hasn’t seen this when they pop off about Scorsese.

A lovely and generous character study about a woman who had to reach middle age — and suffer tragedy — before she could become herself. If there’s a dominant theme, it is that even the best men can be (and are) burdens on the women around them.

"Okie dokie that's enough female representation for the next 50 years!"

you know when you immediately love a movie but then it strikes that perfect chord and you cry the whole way through not necessarily because it's that sad but just cuz it touched you real good? that moment happened right when ellen burstyn got on the piano for her singing gig audition -- as if i wasn't already charmed and heartbroken by the way she outfit repeats her best green dress and puts a band-aid on her shoe instead of directly on her heel (!) because she hasn't broken them in yet. i also love her dynamic with her son ("life's short" / "so are you") and the moment she has a breakthrough with diane ladd.
35mm. Metrograph.

that scene where tommy spends five minutes trying to tell a joke in such a complex way that it never even reaches the punchline but he is so determined to get the hilarity of it across that he refuses to stop trying... yeah...

Review by Josh Lewis ★★★★ 2
An excellent New Hollywood road movie update on the type of female-centered romance melodramas of Douglas Sirk or George Cukor, which were special for how much careful attention they paid to the class details, marriage/motherhood dynamics, and thwarted stardom dreams of their protagonists. Ellen Burstyn's complex and moving performance as the newly-widowed Alice who packs her bags and son into the car to start a new life as a California lounge singer and instead ends up a diner waitress in Arizona is so obviously the heart and soul that even the Academy noticed in 1974 but her decision to ask Warner to hire a hot, young director who had never made a studio film before to give it some authentic…
